Restasis (cyclosporine) is an eye drop medication used to treat chronic dry eye which may be caused by inflammation. Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressant that increases tear production which may have been reduced by eye inflammation.

Always read the medication information and instructions before using this medication.
Always follow your doctor’s directions.

• Wash your hands before applying Restasis.
• Restasis comes in single-use vials. Mix the medication before using it by gently turning the vial upside down a few times. Restasis should appear white in colour.
• Tip your head backwards and use your finger to pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Look up and away from the dropper and squeeze out a drop.
• Close your eyes for between two and three minutes and press down in the corner of your eye with your finger to prevent the liquid from draining into your tear duct.
• If you also use any other eye drops, wait at least fifteen minutes before applying.
• Do not touch the tip of the dropper or let it touch any surface to prevent contamination.
• If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying Restasis and wait at least fifteen minutes before reinserting.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.

Other information you should also know:

• Restasis is not approved to be used by anyone younger than 16.

Common side effects of Restasis:

• Blurred vision.
• Feeling as if there is something in your eye.
• Mild redness, itching, stinging or burning.

If you have any of the following cyclosporine side effects, seek medical help:

• Eye pain, redness, swelling, discomfort, crusting or drainage.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Restasis?

If you miss a dose of Restasis, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
