Gabitril (tiagabine) is an anti-epileptic medication used to treat partial seizures. Tiagabine is usually prescribed to be taken with other medications and works by increasing certain chemicals within your brain and by reducing the spread of seizure activity.

• Gabitril should be taken with food at the same time each day.
• Tiagabine is normally taken with other medications.
• You should carry an ID card or wear a medical tag stating that you take this medication.
• Do not start or stop taking Gabitril unless directed to by a doctor.
• Speak to your doctor if your condition worsens.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of epilepsy or other seizure disorders, liver disease, mood disorders, depression or abnormal weave tests (EEG).
• If you have ever had suicidal thoughts or actions.
• If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breast-feeding. Gabitril may cause harm to an unborn baby or nursing infant.

Other information you should also know:

• All of your medical providers should be aware that you take Gabitril.
• This medication should not be used by anyone younger than 12.
• Gabitril can cause blurred vision or impair your reactions. Avoid driving, operating machinery or any other activities which require clear vision or alertness until it can be done safely.

Common side effects of Gabitril:

• Tiredness.
• Nervousness or shaking.
• Dizziness.
• Stomach pain or diarrhea.

If you have any of the following tiagabine side effects, seek medical help:

• Problems paying attention or trouble concentrating or speaking.
• Confusion.
• Mental or mood problems including depression.
• A seizure that does not stop.
• Suicidal thoughts or thoughts about harming.
• Weakness.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Gabitril?

If you miss a dose of Gabitril, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

Gabitril is available in 5mg, 10mg and 15mg strengths.
