Invokana is a medication prescribed for people with type 2 diabetes to lower blood sugar levels. Invokana contains canagliflozin which works by helping your kidneys to remove glucose from your bloodstream. This medication is usually taken as part of a treatment plan which can also include regular exercise and diet.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of kidney disease, liver disease, heart problems, circulation problems, nerve problems in your legs or feet, dehydration, bladder infections, other urination problems, pancreas disorders, diabetic ketoacidosis or a diabetic foot ulcer or amputation.
• If you are on a low-salt diet.
• If you drink alcohol and your past consumption.

Other information you should also know:

• Invokana should not be taken by anyone younger than 18.
• This medication may affect your medical test results. Make sure that all of your doctors are aware that you use canagliflozin.
• Do not breast-feed while taking this medication.
• During pregnancy, Invokana should not be taken during your second or third trimesters. Tell your doctor as soon as you become pregnant.

Common side effects of Invokana:

• Increased urination.

If you have any of the following side effects of canagliflozin, seek medical help:

• Little or no urination.
• Burning urination.
• Lightheadedness or the feeling that you might pass out.
• Leg or feet ulcers.
• Pain, tenderness or infections in your legs or feet.
• High potassium levels symptoms such as weakness, nausea, loss of movement or irregular heartbeats.
• Genital infection symptoms including fever, feeling unwell and burning, itching, odor, pain, discharge, redness, tenderness or swelling of the genital or rectal area.
• Signs of dehydration including weakness, dizziness or feeling lightheaded.
• Signs of ketoacidosis such as trouble breathing, unusual drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or confusion.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Invokana?

If you miss a dose of Invokana, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

Is there a generic alternative to Invokana?

There is currently no therapeutically equivalent generic alternative to Invokana.
