Januvia (sitagliptin phosphate) is a medication used to improve blood sugar control in adults who have type 2 diabetes. Januvia may be used alone or with other medications but should be taken as part of a treatment plan which includes lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise. Januvia works by increasing your levels of incretins, which are natural substances inside the body. Incretins regulate and increase the amount of insulin which helps to control your blood sugar levels.

• Take Januvia with or without food.
• Try to take Januvia at the same time each day.
• Continue taking this medication even when you feel well. Do not stop taking Januvia without speaking to a doctor.
• Check your blood sugar regularly and speak to your doctor if your measurement are consistently too high or low. Your dosage may need to be altered.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of kidney disease, heart problems, high triglycerides, gallstones or pancreas problems.
• Your history of alcohol use.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Your dosage may need to be altered.
• If you are breast-feeding.
• If you develop a fever or infection. Your dosage may need to be altered.

Other information you should also know:

• You should limit your alcohol use while taking Januvia. Alcohol can increase the risk of low blood sugar levels.
• Skipping a dose of medication, over eating or lack of exercise may result in high blood sugar levels.
• Januvia should not be used by anyone younger than 18.

Common side effects of Januvia:

• Low blood sugar
• Increased urination.
• Nausea.
• Stuffed or runny nose.
• Sore throat.
• Headaches.

If you have any of the following sitagliptin phosphate side effects, seek medical help:

• Severe or ongoing joint pain.
• Little or no urination.
• Signs of an autoimmune reaction including blisters, itching or a breakdown of the outer skin layer.
• Heart failure symptoms such as rapid weight gain, swelling in your legs or feet or shortness of breath (even with mild exertion or while lying down).
• Signs of a severe skin reaction such as fever, sore throat, skin pain, burning in your eyes or a red or purple skin rash which spreads causing blistering and peeling.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Januvia?

If you miss a dose of Januvia, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

Is there a generic alternative to Januvia?

There is currently no therapeutically equivalent generic alternative to Januvia.
