Orthovisc is a medication used to treat knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. Orthovisc contains sodium hyaluronate and comes in a syringe form to be injected by a trained healthcare provider. Orthovisc is usually given after other arthritis medications have been unsuccessfully tried. Sodium hyaluronate is a fluid that works as a lubricant and shock absorber for your knee joint allowing you to move more smoothly, lessening your pain.

• If your treatment requires more than one injection then additional injections should be given at least one week after your initial injection.

• If you have any drug or other allergies.

• Orthovisc is not approved to be used by anyone younger than 21.

Common side effects of Orthovisc:

• Joint pain, swelling or stiffness.
• Mild pain, discomfort, redness or swelling where the medication was injected.
• Itching, tingling or numbness.
• Back pain.
• Headaches.
• Dizziness.

If you have any of the following side effects of Orthovisc, seek medical help:

• Increased knee pain.
• Bleeding.
• Signs of an infection such as warmth or redness or swelling around the knee.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Orthovisc?

If you miss a dose of Orthovisc, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

Who should administer Orthovisc?
