Qvar is a corticosteroid inhaler containing beclomethasone. Qvar is used to prevent the symptoms of asthma including difficulty breathing, chest tightness, coughing and wheezing. Qvar is most effective when taken regularly and is not a rescue inhaler and therefore should not be used to relieve an asthma attack. Beclomethasone works by decreasing swelling and irritation in your airways in order to make breathing easier.

• Qvar is an oral inhaler and is usually taken twice daily.
• Before your first use, prime your Qvar inhaler by pumping two test sprays into the air.
• Rinse your mouth with water without swallowing after using Qvar.
• Do not stop taking Qvar suddenly. Speak to your doctor about the best way to stop this medication.
• Qvar should be taken regularly to be most effective. It may take four weeks to feel the full benefit of Qvar although you may notice some improvement within 24 hours.
• Qvar is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used to relieve a sudden asthma attack.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of a osteoporosis, tuberculosis, a weak immune system, herpes infections of the eye, cataracts, glaucoma, increased pressure in the eye or any type of bacterial, fungal or viral infections.
• If you are pregnant or planning on pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding.
• If you notice any sign of infection.

Other information you should also know:

• You should avoid people with contagious infections, especially chickenpox or measles if you have not had them or been vaccinated against them.
• Beclomethasone can weaken your immune system.
• Qvar is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used to relieve an asthma attack.

Common side effects of Qvar:

• Headaches.
• Hoarseness, sore throat, dry throat or voice changes.
• A bad taste in the mouth.

If you have any of the following beclomethasone side effects, seek medical help:

• Sudden worsening of breathing problems after using Qvar.
• White patches on your tongue or in your mouth.
• Unusual tiredness.
• Muscle pain or weakness.
• Vision changes.
• Unusual hair growth.
• Easy bleeding or slow wound healing.
• Thinning skin.
• Puffy face.
• Easier bruising.
• Increased thirst or urination.
• Signs of infection such as sore throat, chills, fever or ear pain. Qvar can weaken your immune system making it more likely to get a fatal infection.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Qvar?

If you miss a dose of Qvar, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

How long does it take Qvar to work?

It may take four weeks to feel the full benefit of Qvar although you may notice some improvement within 24 hours.
