Spiriva (tiotropium bromide) is an inhaler used to prevent bronchospasm in adults with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and to prevent asthma attacks. Spiriva comes with its own handihaler inhalation device and works by relaxing muscles in your airways which increases airflow to your lungs.

• Spiriva comes with its own inhalation device known as a handihaler and with medication capsules.
• Load a capsule into the device making sure that the mouthpiece has closed. Press the button on the side of the device to release the medicine into the inhalation chamber.
• You will need two inhalations to get a full dose from each capsule.
• Spiriva capsules should only be used by the handihaler device and should not be taken by mouth. Do not use your handihaler to take any other medication.
• Keep each capsule in the blister pack until you are ready to use it as exposure to air can ruin these capsules.
• Spiriva is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used to treat a flare-up of COPD.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of narrow-angle glaucoma, enlarged prostate, urination problems. bladder obstruction or kidney disease.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
• If you are breast-feeding. It may not be safe to breast-feed while using this inhaler.

Other information you should also know:

• Spiriva capsules should only be used by the handihaler device and should not be taken by mouth. You should not use your handihaler to take any other medications.
• Spiriva is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used to prevent a bronchospasm attack.

Common side effects of Spiriva:

• Chest pain or a fast heart rate.
• Dry mouth.
• Cold symptoms including sore throat, sinus pain, stuffy or a runny nose.
• Upset stomach.
• Constipation.

If you have any of the following tiotropium bromide side effects, seek medical help:

• Breathing problems including choking or wheezing after taking Spiriva.
• Eye pain or redness.
• Vision changes including blurred vision or seeing halos around lights.
• Little, no, burning or painful urination.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Spiriva?

If you miss a dose of Spiriva, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose. Do not take more than two doses in a 24 hour period.
