Wellbutrin XL is an antidepressant medication that is prescribed to treat the major depressive disorder as well as seasonal affective disorder. Wellbutrin XL works by restoring the balance of natural substances in your brain such as dopamine and norepinephrine. This balance can improve your mood and your feelings of well-being.

• Wellbutrin XL may be taken with or without food. This medication can be taken with or following a meal or snack to prevent stomach upset.
• Wellbutrin is usually taken in the morning as taking it later in the day may cause sleeping problems.
• Swallow this medication whole without chewing, crushing or breaking it.
• Unless you have a seizure, do not stop taking Wellbutrin XL suddenly or change your dose as this may cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Speak to your doctor about how to safely stop using this medication.
• It may take up to four weeks to feel the full benefit of Wellbutrin XL.
• Speak to your doctor if your condition worsens.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of heart disease, kidney problems, liver disease, diabetes, hereditary glaucoma, high blood pressure or if you have seizures or conditions which increase your risk of seizures such as brain tumour, brain injury or head injury.
• Your use or abuse of drugs or alcohol.
• If you have or have ever had an eating disorder.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. This medication should only be used when clearly needed during pregnancy.

Other information you should also know:

• Wellbutrin XL may cause dizziness. This effect may be worsened by alcohol or marijuana. Do not drive or do any activity requiring alertness until it can be done safely.
• Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of Wellbutrin XL.
• If you are breast-feeding. Wellbutrin XL may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant.

Common side effects of Wellbutrin XL:

• Dry mouth or sore throat.
• Nausea or vomiting.
• Dizziness.
• Headaches.
• Ringing in the ears.
• Weight loss or a loss of appetite.
• Constipation.
• Sleeping problems.
• Increased sweating.
• Shaking.
• An empty tablet shell in your stool.

If you have any of the following Wellbutrin XL side effects, seek medical help:

• Increased blood pressure.
• Fast, pounding or an irregular heartbeat.
• Unusual weight loss or weight gain.
• Mental or mood changes including memory loss, confusion, anxiety, agitation or unusual behavior or thinking.
• Seizures.
• Eye pain, redness, swelling or widened pupils.
• Vision changes including blurred vision or seeing rainbows around lights at night.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling in your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Wellbutrin XL?

If you miss a dose of Wellbutrin XL, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

How long does it take Wellbutrin XL to work?

It may take up to four weeks to feel the full benefit of Wellbutrin XL. Continue taking this medication regularly and speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.
